Am I eligible to work in London?
Most Australian’s will have to work at some stage during their travels. You should sort your Visa requirements out before you leave Australia. You can work in the UK if:
- You are a British Citizen; or
- Are a citizen of a European Community country; or
- Have UK patriality or ancestry; or
If you have a UK born parent or grandparent, you may be eligible to apply. This entitles you to take or seek employment in the UK without requiring a Work Permit for a period of up to five years. You will qualify if you can show that:
- you are a Commonwealth citizen
- you are aged 17 or over
- you have a grandparent who was born in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Mann (see note below)
- you have a grandparent that was born in what is now the Republic of Ireland prior to 31 March 1922
- you are able to work and intend to do so in the UK
- you can support yourself and any dependants, and live without needing any help from public funds
Note: if you or your parent (who you are claiming ancestry through) are adopted, you can still apply for entry clearance under this category. You must show evidence of the legal adoption with your application form.
- You are a citizen of a Commonwealth country aged between 17 and 30;
If you are a Commonwealth citizen, aged between 17 and 30, you may be eligible to enter the United Kingdom as a Working Holidaymaker provided you satisfy the criteria listed below. Prior entry clearance is mandatory.
- Your main purpose should be to take a holiday. Employment should be seen as incidental to the holiday and therefore you are not allowed to work for more than twelve months over the two-year visa period.
- A Working Holidaymaker visa is only issued once - it cannot be reissued at a later date unless you have not activated the visa by entering the UK as a Working Holidaymaker. For those persons holding more than one nationality who have been issued a visa, you cannot apply for a second visa in your other passport.
- If successful, you will be admitted to the United Kingdom for a maximum period of two years. The two-year period will run continuously from the date the visa is issued, regardless of any time spent traveling outside the UK. This period cannot be extended nor can it be put on hold.
- Extensions of stay in the UK
- You cannot extend your stay as a working holidaymaker. However, you may be eligible to switch into work permit employment after 12 months in the UK if your occupation is on the list of 'shortage occupations'. Working holidaymakers can also apply to stay in the UK as "Innovators" and in the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP).
